The 3 Magic Words of Listening

I did a Dating Tele-clinic last night on communication and one of the highlights for the participants was the “3 magic words of listening”. They are… “Is there more?” How different would it be if you could listen to another’s issues with curiosity and interest instead of getting constricted and defensive? How would you feel if you had an issue and were asked, “is there more?” rather than being given advice or being told to calm down? One of the greatest gifts you can give to a loved one is to listen and offering these simple words “is there more?” is a great first step!

Words of Affirmation

One of my all-time favorite books is The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman. In this book he talks about the ways people give and receive love – and how this awareness can deepen loving relationships. I was thinking this morning about “words of affirmation” which he describes as “unsolicited compliments” as well as hearing the words “I love you.” For me, unsolicited compliments have never been very meaningful, but if someone I loved expressed in words the positive difference I make in their life… well, then, those would be loving words for me. So it’s not so much about feedback on how I look in a certain outfit, it’s about the contribution I am making. This is on a whole different level, as far as I’m concerned.
